Description

:bulletblack: { FAST FACTS: }
:pointr: On hind legs, the typical rhoyquin female stands between one foot, seven inches tall to one foot, eleven inches tall.
:pointr: She will usually weigh three to four and a half pounds.
:pointr: Lifespan ranges from twenty five to maybe even almost forty years.
:pointr: Extremely hostile toward humans.
:pointr: This creature's natural predator are gorkruus.
:pointr: Most active during the day.
:pointr: Due to their big ears, rhoyquins have spectacular hearing; this is their most reliable sense, considering their sense of smell and eyesight aren't all that superior.
:pointr: Incredibly fast runner; can run on both four or two legs, but in times of sudden terror or surprise, typically run on hind legs whilst kicking in hopes of their knee-spikes intimidating the enemy, but will drop to four legs once at a safe enough distance considering they run quicker like this. On hind legs she can reach speed of up to fourty MPH, but on hind legs? An astonishing sixty!

:bulletblack: { ANATOMY: }
A rhoyquin female is cloaked in silky fur, the main color being a gray; the hue of gray ranges with the individual, and some can even appear almost white or black. Its headhair, "thumbs", eartips, cheek-spikes, knee-spikes, and lower abdomen are always orange, whilst its bust, fangs, nose, and inner ears are burgundy in color. Being so both male and female rhoyquins almost always have their hair unintentionally curtained over their face, it is a very rare sight to see their eyes. They have peripheral vision just like humans; their eyes are rounded and range in color from a fiery red (the most common), a red-orange, or maroon; blind rhoyquin females (the most frequent bodily issue with rhoyquins) have a stunning baby-blue color. Their black irises are crescents, like serpents and cats.
On her front arms, the rhoyquin female has two distinguishable fingers, each with a very sharp black claw. But then, there is the small, orange "thumb"- this sharp growth is absent at birth, but grows in only a few weeks and allows the creature to grip things more easily, but it also serves two other helpful purposes. It is also dandy whilst hunting, considering it is often used to stab its prey and inject a small dose of numbing venom. This venom certainly can't kill, but it could be enough to distract and fend off an oppressor. Its last purpose is a quite unorthodox way of marking territory: She will draw this "thumb" through the earth wildly, creating long scars in the ground. She'll also allow a new fluid to escape a very tiny hole on its tip, this time not poison: But a yellow-brown liquid of a very pungent odor. It's practically unbearable to most creatures, and is an effective tactic of keeping away intruders.
Rhoyquin females have long teeth, but are nowhere near as big as the males'. They, like snakes, also have two long, venom-filled fangs; in rhoyquins they always pretrude from the mouth quite a ways. The venom found here is much more potent than that in her thumb; it is neurotoxic, meaning it interferes with brain function and, only in colossal doses, can result in life-threatening paralysis. But, very luckily, it's usually not fatal at the normal dose level and mental fatigue and vertigo will almost always fade with even little treatment in about an hour. She may also spit her poison though, and will easily corrode flesh, likely result in severe infection; thus, her spitting is actually more dangerous than a true injection!
Rhoyquins have a very, very long, black, serpentine tongue that can extend up to eight entire inches out of their mouth. Unlike snakes they don't use their tongue to smell, although they do appear to love flicking it in and out for some reason, but far less frequently than a snake does. The tongue is raspy like a feline's, so can sometimes be a bit painful for one being licked.
As you may see, on the knees of rhoyquin females, they have a large spike, similar to that on their hands. This spike serves little purpose excluding for defense; she may kick violently, hoping to jam the sharp edge into an offender. As well, you can see another set of four spikes on her cheek- but, these little protrusions serve zero purpose, and it is unknown why they're even present.
On their feet, the rhoyquin have three claws. Like the velociraptor dinosaurs that once roamed the earth, rhoyquin females have one big, sickle-shaped claw- their middle nail. It is used in combat, and also to rip open prey to get to the meat they enjoy.
Lastly, the rhoyquin female has a long, relatively rat-like tail that fades to black at the tip. The tail is exceptionally muscular and can be moved every which way, and sometimes they even use this tail as a painful whip!

:bulletblack: { HABITAT: }
Rhoyquins enjoy the comfort of wooded areas with cold temperatures. Preferably, they like to live somewhere near a water source and will inhabit only caves as their "dens", being so they enjoy darkness and, like bats and dolphins, are eligible to preform echolocation. In cases of desperation, a rhoyquin will settle for living in burrows, but only if this is a must.

:bulletblack: { CHARACTERISTICS & FAMILY LIFE: }
Rhoyquins, to most other creatures, are very aloof, distrustful, but most definitely fierce. They usually avoid other creatures, but will occasionally express curiosity and investigate foreign life. They're rather jumpy in new situations and, if they feel intimidated, very snappy. If they are caught in trouble alone, they usually flee, but if together? They'll fight to the death for what's theirs!
Rhoyquins are highly social animals and live in groups known as clans, containing five to up to fourteen individuals. The clan, to prevent anarchy, are dominated by one male, along with his mate. The dominant pair usually retires after a year of leadership, usually handing the crown to one of their offspring. Although there is a dominant pair, the leadership is a bit lenient; the other family members are relatively free to make their own choices, such as where they hunt and what they feel like doing, and are also one hundred percent free to have a mate and children of their own. Why have a leader, then? Simple- the dominant pair are somewhat like "mom and dad". They're the ones to go to when trouble comes and make the decisions in dire situations, and will also choose when to consider moving or if a fight with an opposing clan is necessary.
It's a shame the creatures have such a bad reputation with most other animals- because if they got the opportunity to see a rhoyquin family together, one would see just how lovable these intricate beings truly are. With family rhoyquins are extremely humorous and playful, curious too. The family has an extremely tight bond, and one member will gladly put its own life at risk for the sake of another. Rhoyquins love to playfight and explore, and so long they have accompaniment, can take this curiosity a bit too far; alone a rhoyquin may be very cautious, but with friends they'll stick their nose into basically anything, which can lead them into trouble.
Another thing a rhoyquin enjoys doing is swimming, although they must be careful; they may like to swim, but they're not very good at it. You'll never see a rhoyquin in deep water, and they won't stay in water very long in fear of drowning. But in short doses, they love to flop and paddle around in shallow waters.

:bulletblack: { VOCALIZATION: }
Rhoyquins' basic sound effect is a very throaty, deep, raspy sound, one found repulsive by the usual creature. They also create a large arsenal of hiss-like effects, some sounding similar to hissing cockroaches. In times of fear, they can unleash a throaty roar, one that isn't exactly too pleasant...

:bulletblack: { DIET: }
A rhoyquin family hunts together two times a day- morning and dusk. They will eat an array of foods, and are omnivores. Their diet includes myvrixi (their favorite, but rare, prey), bats (another delicacy), rabbits, lizards, small birds, toads, snakes, squirrels, berries, and an array of other small animals. Rhoyquins typically don't eat very much, being so they have small stomachs that are satisfied quickly. Their biggest nemesis for resources, including food, are the jivikks, and will not tolerate seeing one even for a heartbeat. They are very quick to attack one.

:bulletblack: { REPRODUCTION AND PARENTHOOD: }
No season in specific is called the "mating season" for rhoyquins, being so they will breed any time throughout the year. Females are fertile at three year old (at this point they are considered an adult), although most wait until they are almost four to have young of their own. When two rhoyquins select one another as partners, they are devoted mates for life. Following conception, a rhoyquin female's gestation is a lengthy five months- pretty long for a creature quite small. Her partner is very protective of her throughout this time and, quite cutely, will become somewhat of a "servant" to her, being so that late into a female's gestation, she'll typically become pretty lazy due to the weight of her swollen belly; litters are almost always big. After pregnancy, the mother will give birth to her litter, which can contain twelve to fifteen (and sometimes even twenty) very, very small babies, called kittens. Now don't forget- that one litter is bigger than a common rhoyquin clan! But, this litter shrinks in size very quickly... because even in a litter of twenty? It wouldn't be rare at all if zero lived. As a matter of fact, it's common. Not even once in history has an entire rhoyquin litter survived even more than an hour of life; the largest number of kittens to survive in one birth has only been five, but most commonly there is only one or two survivors- if any at all, taking into thought that the majority of litters bring about no survivors. Why does this happen? For some entirely unknown reason, during pregnancy, the unborn rhoyquins' venom sacs fail to develop properly, and although a tube leads to their knee-spike, "thumb", and fangs, there is also a forth one that attachs to the child's stomach, feeding them their own venom, which begins to eat away the protective lining of their stomach to deteriorate it, slowly killing the unborn. Most kittens are already born dead due to this, but then the remainder will typically die within an hour. But alas, there are the very rare lucky ones... all of the unborn suffer the deterioration of their stomachs, but if this begins late enough, they can live. Immediately after birth, the worrisome mother will direct her child to one of four teats to suckle and, this "magic milk" (not... really, but you get it) can actually save the kitten: Once in the sick stomach, the milk literally "re-builds" its lining, soon returning it to full health. It also stops the extra venom tube (the one attached to its stomach) from functioning. If a rhoyquin kitten survives its first day, usually, that means it will live.
It's perfectly understandable the rhoyquin parents are seriously protective of their kittens. Even the other clan members are- if danger threatens any of the curious young ones? They'll go berserk to defend them. Rhoyquin females are more than happy to feed another's babies, and even males take part, even if the kittens aren't theirs. How? When a kitten is about a week old, it's already moving onto another source of food (along with milk). Males (and females) will bring the babies back food, but, in their own stomachs- they regurgitate their food into the kitten's mouth. At six months old, a kitten is weaned and begins to chose more solid food. At this time the mother can become fertile again, but she probably won't have kittens for most likely another five years. At one year old her kitten is considered a juvenile, two years old a teenager, and finally, they have reached adulthood at three years.

... Well that was fucking long. D:
SO. I finished coloring this two nights ago, finally got it up. Remember that thing I posted, "Three Brief Passages", which had a story about a creature called a myvrix named Najaira, and a rhoyquin was mentioned? Welp, here's a rhoyquin. :3 The myvrixi are the "main species" in the book, but the rhoyquins are my favorite species I've made so far.<3 I LURVE THEM.♥
Hopefully, I'll get chapter one up of that story soon. I'm getting into it, and I know I'll love writing it. c: Hope you enjoyed all this, and if you steal, I swear I'll sick Jackie Chan on yerass or something. 'Cuz I worked hard on all of this.
